Gastroenteritis, often called a stomach infection or stomach flu, causes inflammation of the stomach and intestines. Common symptoms include loose stools, vomiting, nausea, stomach cramps, and sometimes fever. It may result from viral or bacterial infections, contaminated food or water, or close contact with an infected person.
Staying hydrated is important, especially when vomiting or diarrhoea causes fluid loss. Small, frequent sips of water or oral rehydration solution may help replace lost fluids and electrolytes. Eating light, easily tolerated foods as symptoms improve can also support recovery.
Seek medical attention if symptoms are severe, persistent, or accompanied by signs of dehydration such as very little urine, marked weakness, dizziness, or excessive thirst. Blood in the stool, severe abdominal pain, or high fever also warrants prompt medical evaluation. Children, older adults, and people with certain health conditions may require earlier assessment.
